Youth Culture and Technology Works Enter the Forbidden City

Students in Qinghai used the ancient cloisonné enamel craft to vividly portray local wildlife such as Tibetan antelopes; students in Beijing took over, adding computer graphics, laser engraving, modular programming, hardware assembly and sound-and-light effects to create a dynamic display stand. On 19 December, at the national youth creation practice activity and second youth culture-technology forum co-hosted by Science and Technology Daily and the Palace Museum, these small works took a big stage – joining other youth innovation works in ‘Tiangong Xiwu’, the first youth exhibition ever mounted in the Palace Museum.

This year, nearly 10,000 university, middle and primary school students from 27 provincial-level regions focused on culture and sustainable development, designing and building works that revive the sustainable craftsmanship wisdom of traditional culture.

At the forum, organisers expressed the hope that young people would keep their passion for the unknown and keep innovating, with Science and Technology Daily pledging continued support for students’ scientific dreams. Palace Museum director Wang Xudong said young people carry the task of both inheriting Chinese civilisation and pioneering innovation, and the museum will keep deepening cooperation with schools and expanding educational programmes that pass on the culture it holds.

The works’ young creators felt the beauty of technology and the depth of Chinese culture most keenly through teamwork and exchange with peers from other regions.

That afternoon, a seminar on culture-technology integrated education innovation gathered experts from museums, schools and education institutions to discuss hands-on science-culture activities under the reduced homework load policy – with a consensus: bring museums into schools, and bring classrooms into museums, using popular-science resources to support students’ development.
