What Is a 301 Redirect? How to Set One Up for Your Domain

What is a 301 redirect?

A 301 redirect (also called a 301 turn or 301 jump) is one of the status codes in the header of the HTTP data stream the server returns when a user or search engine sends a browsing request to the site’s server. It means this page has permanently moved to another address.

When is a 301 redirect needed?

When a website changes its domain, a permanent 301 redirect from the old domain to the new one recovers lost traffic and SEO. If you hold several idle domains that must point to the same site, permanent 301 redirects achieve it. And if you plan to normalise your URLs, for example the domain without www and the domain with www, a 301 unifies them.

How to set up a 301 redirect?

1. Setting it in the BT Panel (PHP)

To redirect the non-www address to the www address, use the BT Panel: click Websites in the left column, open the site’s settings, choose Redirect, then bind the domain.

2. Setting it in NGINX

Add the following line inside the server block:

rewrite ^(.*)$ https://$host$1 permanent;
