Mini programs make up a large share of what gets built for mobile today. They run inside WeChat, need no install and no uninstall, work across platforms, and cost less than other kinds of app for a comparable result. Which raises the obvious question: does something this popular come expensive, and what does one actually cost?
First, work out what the functions are
Merchants come to a mini program with different purposes, and the function list follows from that. A commerce mini program is mostly about presenting and describing product; a tool has to solve a need while leaving room for advertising; a content mini program has to decide how text and images sit together and how related items get recommended. Those differences have to be talked through with the developer, who will propose an approach and let the client cut it back to what the business actually needs. It takes time up front, and it saves far more time later.
Second, put the scope in writing
Once both sides agree, the developer writes the requirements up, with a price attached to each function — the reference point for everything that follows. Add the screens, the layout and the UI design and a simple mini program generally starts around ¥15,000; a feature-heavy one can run from tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand.
Third, remember what the quote contains
A quote covers the people, not just the product: UI design, front-end engineering, testing, and the developer’s own time. How well the mini program is built also decides how well it can be promoted — a build that takes the platform’s habits into account is easier to market, and costs a little more for it. Weighed against promotion budgets several times the build cost, spending more at the start is usually the cheaper decision.
The practical rule: fix the function list before discussing price, and get the quote itemised by function. A single number quoted before the requirements exist is not a price — it is a guess that will be revised.
