Virtual Humans Accelerate Their Reach into Industry

At a JD Cloud salon on virtual humans and the metaverse, guests agreed that maturing deep learning, content generation, speech and vision technologies drove the sector’s rapid growth this year – and that virtual humans are sinking into industrial applications, helping industries digitise services and marketing.

Wang Linfang, digital human engine technology director at JD Technology, noted that service-type virtual humans – virtual bank tellers, customer service agents, livestream anchors – directly raise operating efficiency.

From Q&A bots to real transactions

‘JD’s virtual humans emphasise industrial deployment and real value in concrete scenes,’ Wang said. In December, Jiangsu Rural Commercial Bank worked with JD Cloud to launch the nation’s first transaction-processing digital employee, the Yanxi VTM digital clerk. Unlike previous consultation-style bots, it independently and accurately completes the full flow of self-service answers and business transactions at bank counters.

The hard part is wiring digital humans into real transaction scenes: the teller must be highly humanlike with good interaction quality, deeply coupled with the bank’s business systems for accuracy and security, and able to ‘understand and act fast’ for every customer. Bank halls are noisy – JD’s digital human recognises digit strings and regional accents precisely, with noise-suppression algorithms improving speech recognition, said Chen Meng, human interaction technology director at JD Technology.

Retail anchors, too

Virtual anchors have landed in retail: digital anchor Xiaomeng went to work during this year’s Double 11 across JD’s self-operated electronics, appliance and mother-baby stores. Driven by AI, she matches gestures to product functions. ‘Six weeks on the job, she helped the Beats flagship store double livestream duration and GMV – and took the crown in JD’s merchant livestream super rankings,’ Wang said.

JD’s virtual humans now deploy across government services, finance, transport, logistics, retail and manufacturing. Industry voices agree virtual humans must integrate deeply with each industry to create real social value: only by genuinely cutting costs and raising efficiency does the technology earn its continuing development – and only then does society enjoy the digital dividend.

JD Cloud says it will keep exploring virtual humans and multimodal interaction, building on AI, big data and cloud computing to deliver virtual humans that solve industry pain points for enterprise and government clients – and support high-quality development of the real economy.
