UI Design Principles: Consistency

Today XZS Tech introduces the consistency principle of UI design, which makes software operation more comfortable and simpler and expresses the product’s positioning and character.

Consistency principle: adhere to user-experience-centred design, with intuitive, concise interfaces and convenient, fast operation, so that users see the corresponding functions at a glance and can use the system quickly without much training.

Fonts: keep fonts and colours consistent; avoid multiple fonts in one theme; display unmodifiable fields uniformly in grey text.

Alignment: keep page elements aligned consistently; unless there are special reasons, avoid multiple data alignments on the same page.

Form entry: on pages with required and optional fields, mark required fields with a conspicuous asterisk; restrict input types per data type and validate formats, allowing only digits in phone number fields and requiring an “@” in email addresses, with clear prompts when input is wrong.

Mouse gestures: clickable buttons and links should switch the cursor to the pointer hand.

Keep function and content descriptions consistent: avoid using multiple words for the same function, such as mixing edit with modify, add with create, or delete with clear. We suggest building a product dictionary during project development, covering the product’s common terms and descriptions, with designers and developers displaying text strictly according to the dictionary’s vocabulary.
