The Interaction Characteristics of Touch Gestures

After the iPhone was born, the way phones were operated changed qualitatively, no longer the button presses and stylus input of feature phones. Gesture-based interaction has replaced the mouse, but tapping a phone with a finger is imprecise, and the variety of gestures on phones is huge, so more interaction issues need consideration.

You have probably had this experience: sitting in the office, sending a text message feels easy. But texting while walking, you may keep tapping the wrong thing or typing the wrong characters. Gesture interaction is affected by the user’s posture and context. While walking, users may have to operate one-handed while also splitting attention to watch the road, and input efficiency drops sharply. Mobile device interaction therefore changes greatly with context, and designers must consider these interaction characteristics to genuinely help users.
