People still ask about the difference between an app and a mini program, and clients always want to know the strengths and weaknesses of each. Here is a walk through both, point by point.
1. A mini program is written in H5. Its interface looks broadly similar to an app’s, but there are differences. A native app runs fast, the system is smoother and it gives users the best experience. A mini program is a lightweight application with comparatively simple functions, so it still falls short of a native app in features and user experience. Its advantages are nonetheless clear: low development cost, and no promotional messages pushed at users.
2. User scale and engagement. The barrier to acquiring an app user is much higher than for an H5 product, which lowers the experience, and that is the app’s weakness. As a result, app user numbers and engagement are relatively low overall. WeChat itself is highly active, but that does not mean official accounts or mini programs are; how large the user base and engagement of mini programs will eventually become is still uncertain.
3. Fit with scenarios. Low-frequency, non-essential, lightweight, single-purpose applications that do not need to call on much of the system’s capability seem to suit mini programs better. But this is also their weak point. For high-frequency essential services, a mini program is at a disadvantage compared with an app.
4. WeChat places limits on some functions. Because mini programs live inside the WeChat system and affect WeChat’s own product development and promotion, it is understandable that WeChat applies restrictions and controls. Beyond the review process, there is also the risk of being taken down, which is hard for founders to accept. A great deal of data stays on the WeChat platform, which amounts to handing over control. If a program is banned, all the effort accumulated beforehand is lost.
