How annoying are pop-up ads? You open an app or a browser and pop-ups appear; you look for the close button and cannot find one. Some pop-ups display a network error, but tapping to view jumps to an ad page or even a game download page. These tricks are unavoidable and a real headache.
Protecting app users’ rights bears on the public’s sense of gain, happiness and security. MIIT has long attached great importance to personal information protection and continues special rectification of apps. In particular, it has recently concentrated on the violations users complain about most: pop-up labels nearly invisible, close buttons small as ants, pages disguised to deceive, and baited clicks hidden in the open, urging companies to respect user demands and fix the deception and misdirection in splash-screen pages through text, images and video.
MIIT said it will treat the rectification of apps that harm user rights as a key practical measure to serve the public, continuously intensify its work and steadily advance the special campaign. According to the administration’s service supervision office, the app rectification starts from four aspects and ten problems: illegally collecting personal information, illegally using personal information, frequently harassing users for permissions, and deceptively inducing users to jump to other pages, with regular naming of offending and delisted apps, to create a safer, healthier and cleaner app environment for the public.
