In 2021 China’s industrial internet accelerated its deep deployment: the three functional systems of networks, platforms and security are taking initial shape, 5G-plus-industrial-internet shows compounding empowerment, and applications reach 20-plus key economic sectors. The China Academy of Industrial Internet predicts the industry’s value added will set a new record in 2021, topping RMB 4 trillion – a new growth engine for the post-pandemic economy.
A national chessboard
MIIT issued the industrial internet innovation action plan (2021-2023), the 5G application ‘sailing’ action plan and the 14th Five-Year telecom plan, coordinating deeper development. Networks: high-quality external networks now cover 300-plus cities and connect 180,000 industrial enterprises; TSN and 5G drive inner-network upgrades; identification resolution crossed from zero to one with five top-level nodes running stably, nearly 60 billion identifiers registered and 158 second-level nodes across 25 provinces. Platforms: 15 cross-industry platforms lead the demonstration, with over 100 influential platforms serving more than 1.6 million enterprises and connecting over 76 million devices. Security: national-provincial-enterprise three-tier situational awareness is forming, with stronger monitoring and emergency response.
Local policies followed: Shanxi issued its own action plan, and the Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Anhui industrial departments signed a strategic agreement to build a Yangtze Delta industrial internet integration demonstration zone.
5G-plus-industrial-internet flowers everywhere
China’s vice-premier told the opening of the 2021 5G-plus-industrial-internet conference that the combination is a historic opportunity for traditional industries’ leapfrog development, offering a new path for digital, networked, intelligent growth of industry and the real economy.
MIIT advanced the ‘512 project’, releasing best-practice results in May and November – 20 typical application scenes such as remote equipment control and production traceability, and 10 key industry practices. By October, over 1.29 million 5G base stations were built in the world’s largest standalone network; end-to-end network slicing and edge computing push 5G from public networks into industrial private networks; and 5G industrial modules now cost under 1,000 yuan, with million-unit-class modules near 400 yuan – low prices driving rapid volume growth.
Over 10,000 5G application innovation cases now span industry, healthcare and education; more than 1,800 5G-plus-industrial-internet projects are under construction nationwide, with six new modes extending across 40 economic sectors and showing results in mining, electronics, equipment, steel and power. As the 14th Five-Year period proceeds, the industrial internet will keep restructuring manufacturing – the necessary road to manufacturing strength.
