How to Build Your Own WeChat Mini Program

Why a mini program in the first place

Mini programs are part of daily use now, and they made everyday tasks easier in a way apps never did: the feature set is complete enough to do the job, the footprint is small, and nothing has to be downloaded. That also makes them easy to open on impulse, which is why they carry more traffic than most channels — and why marketing inside one works. So how do you build your own?

Two routes, one decision

Mini programs are popular enough that there is no shortage of ways to build one, and the route you pick decides most of what follows.

Step one: register the account

Individuals can register a mini program themselves, and the process is short: open the WeChat public platform, click Register, pick Mini Program, and follow the prompts.

Step two: choose your tooling

If you write code, use WeChat’s own developer tools. If you do not, the mainstream route is a third-party builder — and there are a great many of them, which makes choosing the hard part. Weigh four things: the platform’s reputation, the team behind it, the quality of its templates, and whether support actually answers. Do that research before you pay, not after.

Step three: decide what the mini program is for

What should it achieve? Who should it attract? Which industry’s content does it carry? Settle that first. The direction also has to match the service category you registered under, or the mini program will not pass review — a detail that costs people weeks.

Step four: build it

Register on the platform, create the mini program, and choose the content category you registered.

Pick a template and open the editor; new articles are added from the writing screen.

Under style and page design you set colours and layout, and add shortcut buttons, carousels and other blocks so the result looks like yours rather than like a template. Article layout can be changed at any time, which matters more for readership than it sounds. When it looks right, publish and authorise as prompted.

Step five: keep it going

A mini program that is never updated stops earning. Refresh it on a schedule with content your audience actually wants — that is what keeps visitors returning, and returning visitors are what eventually converts.
