To raise a product’s user experience, layout follows four great principles.
Visual focus: the interface must have visual elements that are emphasised and highlighted; not everything emphasised, and not nothing. Show the focus through colour blocks or highlighting.
Hierarchy: distinguish levels through contrast in size, colour and spacing.
Visual weight: form visual weight through texture, colour, white space, shape and position.
Visual direction: common visual guidance follows the F pattern and the Z pattern.
In summary, those are the four common layout design principles in UI layout. Using them together brings a qualitative lift to layout design. Visual focus, hierarchy and visual weight influence one another, and visual direction is the outcome of the first three: whether users can complete their tasks in your product and reach the intended goal depends entirely on the visual direction’s guidance. We can coordinate all of these through size, contrast, colour, white space, shape and position.
