1. Know your user group
First fix a direction: who are your users? Users of different classes and ages favour different themes and design elements, so UI design must be targeted.
2. Clear interfaces
Clarity is the first and most important work of interface design. For your interface to work and be liked, users must first recognise it and know why they would use it. While using it they should anticipate what happens and interact successfully; only a clear interface keeps drawing users back.
3. Interactivity
The interface exists to promote interaction between user and software. A smoothly interactive interface lets users communicate efficiently and raises stickiness.
4. Let users control the interface
Keep the interface in the user’s control and let them decide the system state, with light guidance; reaching the goal becomes easier.
5. Natural transitions
Interface interactions link ring upon ring, so design with the next step deeply considered: think what the next interaction is and realise it through the design.
6. Meet user expectations
People are most comfortable with behaviour that meets expectations, and design dealing with people should achieve that. In practice this means users know at a glance what happens next: if it looks like a button, it should work like one.
7. Strong visual hierarchy
Keep clear hierarchy, because every element’s level is relative: if everything is highlighted, nothing stands out. To add an element needing special emphasis, the designer may need to rethink every element’s visual weight to restore clear hierarchy. Most people never notice visual hierarchy, yet it is the simplest way to strengthen a design.
8. Lighten the user’s cognitive load
Handling visual elements well simplifies the complex, helping others understand your expression faster and more easily. Organising by position and direction naturally expresses relationships between elements. Organising content appropriately relieves the user’s cognitive burden: they need not puzzle over how elements relate, because you have already shown it.
9. Minimal design
Minimal design is more than a trend: from the experience side, a simple interface removes irrelevant noise and makes the UI easier to use. Good UI should be powerful in function yet simple on the surface; a crowded interface, however capable, brings discomfort.
10. A goal that truly lands
Do not stress beauty and coolness alone; ensure the design is an effect development can actually deliver within the project’s real timeline.
