Mobile websites are now basically universal. Even if your PC site cannot win a good optimisation ranking, you can count on fighting back on mobile for a good position. But mobile websites have developed for a shorter time and are less mature than PC sites, so small bugs keep appearing during the build, and we need to watch for and patch them.
1. Speed
A mobile website’s opening speed is a fatal key point. If the site opens slowly, search engines cannot crawl it and the bounce rate rises; however good the content, the site will not rank well. Slow opening generally has two causes: one is hardware, such as the host or the programs; the other is problems in page design, where bigger pages or too many images and flash elements hurt loading speed.
2. Domain adaptation and redirects
Some sites have different domain addresses on PC and mobile, for example www.example.com on PC and m.example.com on mobile. Without adaptation redirects, pages get indexed repeatedly or transcoded by Baidu.
3. Static pages
Dynamic pages can be crawled too, but for SEO and search engines, static remains the friendly choice. To make pages easier to crawl and index, build pages statically or pseudo-statically.
4. Pagination on mobile sites
Many sites now load lists by synchronous endless scrolling, which helps user experience. But search engines do not crawl dynamic effects, so that loaded content may never be crawled; pagination is the better pattern.
5. Image thumbnails
Mobile pages are small, and images carried straight over from the PC site will slow the mobile site down. If the program is set to generate thumbnails automatically, the problem is solved.
6. Use fewer media elements
Many people love effects, images and videos on their sites, but sites heavy with media elements open sluggishly, and search engines struggle to crawl media content. Use them sparingly.
