Today many enterprises build their own websites. One reason is that with the development of internet technology, website building has matured and is no longer as hard as before. Another is that most enterprises have websites, but many of them use template websites. The characteristics of template websites show in the following aspects.
Lookalike structure. The web has many free building templates anyone can use, which easily leads to serious homogenisation: the site shows neither the industry’s traits nor the enterprise’s image, and leaves no deep impression on users. This hurts customers’ goodwill and is bad for brand and image building.
Simple functions, hard to upgrade. Websites built on templates cannot flexibly extend functionality, adding to later maintenance difficulty. The code they use is old and full of vulnerabilities, easily exploited by hackers.
Programme functions. Template websites offer customers many function modules to choose from, but these modules’ functions are predefined and generally cannot be customised or modified. A custom website develops every program function to the client’s specific and differentiated requirements, easy to modify later.
Bad for SEO. To some extent template building affects a site’s inclusion and ranking. Search engine spiders crawl the web, and sites built from templates have very similar code and structures, leading to high duplication. Search engines favour new things, so structural similarity is very bad for ranking; where similarity is severe, search engines ignore the site automatically.
