On 14 December, the journal Engineering, published by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, announced the “2021 Global Top Ten Engineering Achievements” in Beijing.
The list honours major engineering achievements completed worldwide in the past five years, verified in practice and of global influence, reflecting the highest current level of engineering science and technology in their fields. The ten achievements are: AlphaGo and AlphaFold; the development and application of CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology; extreme ultraviolet lithography systems; fifth-generation mobile communications (5G); the 500-metre Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope; hybrid rice; the InSight Mars lander; the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic; the Three Gorges water conservancy project on the Yangtze; and ultra-high-voltage power transmission.
According to the journal, the new annual list aims to promote engineering progress, lead innovation, leverage the guiding role of academic journals and draw global public attention to engineering. The selection committee was formed jointly by Engineering’s editorial board and experts from the Chinese Academy of Engineering’s Global Engineering Fronts programme. Following the principles of independence, objectivity and scientific rigour, the process included a worldwide call for nominations, expert review and a public survey, drawing broad participation from engineering and technology professionals around the world.
