Every Prefecture-Level City to Have a Science Museum by 2025

The China Association for Science and Technology has issued the 14th Five-Year plan for developing the modern science museum system (2021-2025), calling for stronger infrastructure so that every prefecture-level city has a science museum by 2025.

The system grew well through the last five-year period: the number of physical science museums rose by 169, adding 1.376 million square metres of floor space, with cumulative attendance exceeding 300 million. Imbalances persist, though – service capacity at small and mid-size museums is weak, quality content supply is insufficient, and nationwide resource sharing is limited.

The plan directs cities with conditions to build museums suited to local circumstances, supports social participation in county-level museums, and encourages construction in central and western regions, old revolutionary base areas, ethnic minority areas, border areas and less-developed regions. It also encourages new co-construction models with museums, libraries and cultural centres, plus thematic museums highlighting local scientists and achievements – with no fewer than 200 new rural middle-school science museums.

An excellence programme will select and cultivate 5 to 10 museums with extra support for exhibition and education development, building foundations for world-class science museums.
