By 2025, breakthroughs in key technologies supporting peak carbon; by 2030, those technologies reaching international advanced levels; by 2060, a batch of original, disruptive technologies in application supporting carbon neutrality.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences published its strategic action plan for science and technology supporting peak carbon and carbon neutrality in Beijing, setting near-, medium- and long-term goals: solving key scientific and technical problems, driving the energy revolution, upgrading industry, and accelerating a green, low-carbon technology revolution.
The plan lays out eight programmes — strategic research, basic and frontier interdisciplinary innovation, key core technology breakthroughs, comprehensive demonstration of new technologies, talent support and cultivation, international cooperation, capacity building, and public engagement — along with 18 key tasks aimed at the major technology needs of the carbon goals.
‘Peak carbon and carbon neutrality amount to a broad and deep systemic transformation of the economy and society, touching energy structure, industrial processes, transport, and ecosystem and engineering carbon sinks. It demands cross-domain integration and breakthroughs on technical bottlenecks to form a technology system that can actually support the goals — and innovation is the key,’ said Zhang Tao, a vice-president of the academy.
The plan is an open one, drawn up by academicians and experts over nearly half a year, and will be updated as international conditions and national needs evolve.
The academy has already run strategic pilot programmes in the field, including work on the fundamentals of energy chemistry conversion and on transformative clean energy technologies, and produced original results. Its advisory work organises technology development around three ends — power generation, consumption, and carbon fixation — with roadmap studies running from carbon control through reduction and low carbon to neutrality.
