During the Two Sessions, reporters watched cloud video feeds on three 5G-plus-4K screens at the press centre — smooth, no stutter, interaction in sync with the hall. At the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, 5G cloud broadcasting, ultra-HD live streams and smart viewing were on show. Those are the visible edge of a wider shift: telemedicine, cloud office and online education have entered daily life, and 5G has moved into the core of production.
2022 is the key year for 5G applications to reach scale. Technical and scenario validation in key industries is largely complete, several application types have proven commercial value, and coverage now spans 15 of 20 economy categories and 39 of 97 industry classes. This year 5G will merge with more vertical industries and speed up industrial digitalisation.
Proposals focused on cost and focus. One operator executive suggested inclusive fiscal support for companies developing and using 5G applications, targeted policies for steel, coal, cement, manufacturing and transport, more investment and financing for major projects, and innovation bases that bring operators, enterprises and research institutes together around core industry scenarios — the point being to solve the real pain points in traditional production rather than to run more pilots.
The factory floor
The industrial internet is 5G’s main battleground, and 5G plus industrial internet is the grip point where the digital and physical economies actually merge. Proposals here push government to lead on solving construction and operations problems, to cut the cost of bringing 5G into industry, and to build an application innovation system so use cases mature faster.
Connected vehicles are another frontier where 5G’s remote control capability matters. Proposals suggest building intelligent transport infrastructure slightly ahead of demand, expanding vehicle networking pilot zones, and using vehicle-road coordination to lift traffic efficiency and safety, pulling the auto industry toward intelligence and connectivity.
Education and health
In livelihoods, 5G breaks supply bottlenecks and makes basic public services more even. During the sessions one delegate taught and sang with children in a mountain village a thousand kilometres away over 5G, AI and VR. Education still lacks resources in places, and a screen plus a 5G connection can pull quality teaching into more villages.
In healthcare, ‘5G plus medical health’ is seen as an important part of building a healthier society: map out a development plan, expand 5G coverage to give medical institutions a reason to invest, and tailor approaches by region rather than imposing one template.
5G at scale is arriving on time. More applications will emerge this year, serving industry and daily life alike — and the value shows up in productivity, not in the base stations.
