To speed up energy saving and efficiency improvement in data centres, and to steer them toward a green path that is efficient, low-carbon, intensive and circular in support of peak-carbon and carbon-neutrality goals, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, the National Government Offices Administration, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission and the National Energy Administration have published 44 data centres for the 2021 national green list.
The list is organised around five priority application areas — telecom, internet, public institutions, energy and finance — and covers manufacturing, telecom, internet, public institutions, energy, finance and e-commerce. Expert review by the departments concerned produced a shortlist of 44.
In telecom, 14 sites were selected, among them China Mobile’s Harbin data centre, China Unicom’s Chongqing Shuitu data centre and China Telecom’s cloud computing park in Inner Mongolia. In internet, 19 were selected, including Baidu’s Yangquan cloud computing centre, the GDS-Alibaba Zhangbei data centre, Tencent’s Huailai Dongyuan cloud data centre and the Houshayu data centre of TravelSky. Five public institution sites made the list, among them the Foshan tax bureau data centre of the State Taxation Administration. Energy contributed one, PetroChina’s Karamay data centre. Finance contributed five, including Bank of China’s Hefei cloud computing base and China Merchants Bank’s Shanghai data centre.
