Mini Program Versus App: Seven Practical Differences

1. How you get it

An app has to be downloaded and installed from an app store, which costs data, occupies storage and takes time before first use. A mini program is found by search and used immediately, and it leaves no cache behind — close it and the space is back.

2. Message permissions

Apps push notifications and advertising at the user, often against their wishes. A mini program cannot send anything unprompted; it can only reply with a template message the user’s own action has triggered. That is a real constraint on re-engagement, and a real relief for the user.

3. Market room

The mobile internet is past its halfway point. The app boom of the last decade produced WeChat, Alipay, Meituan and the rest, and the obvious categories are saturated — almost every field has its incumbent. The mini program is the widest-reaching, most scenario-capable option available now, and its market is still opening rather than closing.

4. Development difficulty

A conventional app has to be designed and built twice, once for iOS and once for Android, then iterated on both. Design, time and labour all cost more. A mini program is one codebase, a shorter cycle and a lower cost — a few developers can ship in days, which is what lowers the barrier for a small team with an idea.

5. Getting it published

An app has to be submitted to a dozen or more app stores, each with its own materials and its own review, which is tedious and slow. A mini program is submitted once, through the platform.

6. The user base

An app can address any smartphone user. A mini program addresses WeChat’s users — and by the platform’s own reporting that is a monthly active base approaching nine hundred million. For most consumer businesses that is not a subset worth worrying about.

7. Promotion cost

An app asks the user to download several megabytes, then to register, before it does anything for them: a hard sell at every step, and an expensive one. A mini program is reached through a QR code, a share, a group, Nearby Mini Programs and search — several entry points, all riding on traffic that already exists, which is what makes acquisition cheaper.
