The Process of Building a Marketing Website

1. Discovery

The project manager talks to the client directly — or meets them at the office — to dig into the strengths and particularities of the product and the service. The output is a plan written for this client rather than a template proposal.

2. Planning

From that conversation the project manager writes a plan that is both readable and matched to what the client needs, so the client can actually understand it. It goes back for review and confirmation, and then it is executed — a plan is only worth having if it is agreed before anything is designed.

3. Page design

Against the requirements and the plan, the home page is designed first and sent over for review. To keep the schedule, the client confirms within the agreed number of working days, and revisions are welcome at this stage — this is when a change is still cheap.

4. Slicing

The designer cuts every page to the W3C standard, which is also the standard search engines index most reliably, and uploads the results to the designated folder on the server. From there the build passes to the developers.

5. Development

The programmers build the functions listed in the plan. Alongside making them work, every page needs its own SEO provision — load time and page weight belong in the specification, not in the retrofit.

6. Content

The content is the usual set: company news, industry news, press coverage, certificates, case studies, about, product centre, contact. The best time to supply the copy and the product images is during the design stage, because that is when the layout can still be shaped around them rather than the other way round.

7. Quality check and sign-off

The internal QA team tests the whole site against the marketing-site standard, then hands it to the client for acceptance. Nothing goes live before both have passed it.
