Beauty is a textbook online-to-offline trade, which means the connection between what happens online and the appointment itself is the recurring problem. Before mini programs, a salon took bookings by phone and through third-party platforms. Both are messy, and neither leaves a usable record.
A mini program addresses that. It is easy to find, and once the booking is done the customer leaves, which is exactly the behaviour the trade needs.
Three problems it solves
1. Visibility
A salon’s natural customers live within a few kilometres, but a shop’s exposure is limited to whoever walks past. Raising that exposure is the first problem, and the nearby mini programs function is the answer: it shows users the businesses with mini programs within five kilometres. Open one, and the effective radius goes from 500 metres to 5,000.
Pair that with the shop’s own promotions, and a much larger group has a reason to come in.
2. Volume
A mini program generates real traffic for a beauty business, because the marketing functions are built in. Campaigns can run continuously, and each one brings people in. Group-buy pricing is the obvious example: it is easy to get a customer to bring a friend, because the friend gets the same price.
3. Cost, and margin
To reach volume, beauty businesses have traditionally listed on third-party platforms. Those platforms take 5% to 20% of each order, which means a customer who spends ten yuan leaves the salon eight. Run the bookings through your own mini program and that deduction goes away, and the margin is the salon’s.
The social dimension matters as much as the transactional one. WeChat is where people already spend time and where they are receptive, which makes a mini program a good fit for a membership scheme, and a reasonable answer to the retention problem that salons have always had.
What it should contain
01 Online booking
Customers book a slot, which means they can plan their day and the salon can plan its staff, and nobody waits.
02 Hairstyle preview
A customer uploads a photo and tries styles against their own face, to see which suits them before committing.
03 Service menu
The treatments on offer, described properly, with prices, so the customer can check before asking.
04 Referral reward
A successful recommendation earns the referrer a share of the resulting purchase.
05 Targeted campaigns
Promotions aimed at bringing in new customers while holding on to existing ones.
06 Retail
Haircare products sold through the same account, which is convenient for the customer and adds a revenue line.
07 Account area
Orders, rewards and history, in one place.
Why it is worth doing
Two reasons, and they are the two that matter in this trade. It gives the salon a way to manage customers that produces repeat business rather than hoping for it. And it makes booking fast, which is worth something to the customer and to the staff at the same time.
