How to Tell a Reliable Development Company

Sooner or later a business needs software built. Sometimes it is promotional, sometimes it is an internal tool that makes an existing process faster, and either way the work gets commissioned from an outside development company. The question is what makes one of those a good supplier.

The answer is not in the pitch deck. It is in what the company is willing to hand over at the end, and in how it behaves before that. Three things are worth checking.

1. Does it hand over the source code

A company that delivers the source, comments it, and makes sure your own people can read and extend it is telling you something. It is telling you that the relationship does not depend on you being unable to leave. That also means no ongoing fee to keep using what you paid to build, and the ability to commission someone else later without starting over.

This is the single strongest signal, because it is the one a supplier with a weak position will not give.

2. Does it do the research before it designs

A professional supplier looks at what competitors have built, works out which functions actually earn their place, and only then designs. The requirement that comes out of that is usually smaller and better than the one the client walked in with, which is a good sign rather than a bad one.

What you are buying at this stage is judgement, not capacity. Anyone can build what they are told to build.

3. Does it deliver on the date

If the requirement has not changed, the date should not either. Sliding dates on a stable brief point to a planning problem, and the same problem tends to reappear later under a different name.

What that adds up to

A company that hands over the code, researches before it designs, and holds its dates is a professional one. None of the three is exotic, and all three are visible before you sign, which is the point of asking.
